I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Arizona, holding a master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling. My approach to mental health, business, and life is deeply influenced by my personal experiences. From growing up in a tough environment with limited social support to my experiences as a Division I collegiate and professional athlete, I’ve gained firsthand insights into the importance of resilience and the critical need for supportive communities. These insights have guided my dedication to fostering environments conducive to growth and healing.

In 2020, I founded Kona, driven by a vision to start a group practice that not only offers high-quality mental health services but also fosters a supportive, collaborative environment for therapists. This initiative reflects the teamwork and determination I cherished in athletics, alongside the supportive network I wish I had early in my life. Today, I am proud to witness Kona flourishing as a vital community asset, aiding individuals, couples, and families across all stages of life.

As a therapist, I focus on assisting adolescents, adults, and both current and former athletes dealing with issues such as anxiety, trauma, depression, stress, life transitions, self-esteem, relationship challenges, and performance concerns. My therapeutic method is integrative, involving the assessment and regulation of thoughts, emotions, physiological states, and environmental interactions. I primarily draw upon cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, emotion-focused therapy, and polyvagal theory.

Outside of my duties at Kona, I enjoy engaging in physical activities, spending quality time with loved ones, and relaxing with my dog or a good comedy.

Hi there! I'm Cheryl, and I'm thrilled to connect with you as a Licensed Master Social Worker right here in Arizona. My path in counseling has been shaped by a deep commitment to understanding and assisting individuals through a wide array of challenges, whether they're navigating family dynamics, coping with substance abuse, or working through trauma. My passion lies in guiding adolescents, emerging adults, and adults through life's complexities with compassion and resilience.

In my counseling practice, I weave together a variety of therapeutic techniques, drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Narrative therapy, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing. This eclectic approach allows me to tailor interventions to each client's unique needs and goals, meeting them exactly where they are in their journey.

As a proud member of the Tohono O’odham nation, my extensive experiences interacting with elders and those within my community, as well as people from various backgrounds in all segments of society, has profoundly shaped my comprehensive worldview. I deeply value the importance of cultural context, environmental influences, and the acceptance of diverse viewpoints in fostering personal growth and healing in addition to professional development and success.

Additionally, I'm able to utilize the knowledge I've gained from earning my MBA to specialize in developing policies and behavioral health programming. I leverage my experience in crafting financial policies, workflow standards, and strategic planning to ensure that Kona Counseling operates efficiently and effectively with clarity and purpose.

When it comes to my business values, I firmly believe in the importance of setting clear goals and objectives. I'm dedicated to Kona's long-term vision and the strategies required to achieve it. Furthermore, I prioritize fostering employee engagement and providing opportunities for team members to actively contribute to the success of Kona Counseling. I firmly believe that by empowering and involving our employees, we can create a supportive and thriving work environment that benefits everyone involved with Kona Counseling.

Outside of my professional role, my heart belongs to my roles as a wife and mother to four amazing children. Family is at the core of who I am, and my upbringing in a large, traditional family, combined with marrying into an even larger one, has deeply enriched my understanding of interpersonal dynamics and the importance of connection.

When I'm not motivating my team you can find me outdoors, exploring new hobbies, diving into arts and crafts, or cooking up a storm with my husband. These activities fuel my creativity and serve as vital reminders of the significance of self-care in maintaining a healthy balance between work and personal life.

Overall, I'm deeply committed to supporting both our clients and our staff on their journeys toward healing, growth, and empowerment. I'm here to walk alongside you with empathy, understanding, and a sprinkle of optimism every step of the way.
